(Bilingual; English, French Designated)-   35 hours per week

Salary Scale:              $31.00-$35.00/hour with 4% in lieu of benefits

The Britannia Woods Community House is seeking two Student Family Advocates (SFA) to join our Family Advocacy Capacity-Building Engagements (FACE). Funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS), the SFA roles deliver highly-targeted, community-based, and culturally-relevant advocacy supports, tailored to the experiences and needs of Black students ages 6-15 and their families. Students served live in Britannia Woods and surrounding Ottawa-west social housing neighbourhoods.

The SFAs will support children and parents to navigate the education system by working with them to validate and address their experiences and lived realities of Anti-Black Racism. The SFA role will work with children and families by empowering them with community and school-based supports to achieve positive school experiences. In addition, the SFA role will work with parents to increase their capacity and skills in improving their children’s wellness and academic experiences.

This role requires optimal aptitudes in case management, advocacy and crisis counselling to help clients to effectively manage their maladaptive emotions and behaviors, while simultaneously increasing their social capacity. The main responsibilities of the SFA are to; support the family to maintain emotional wellness, provide resource navigation support within the education system, identify, and assess barriers and hardships that are impacting their lives, provide language and literacy support and other appropriate supports. Most importantly, this role entails providing education and opportunities that validate and address the child and family’s experiences of Anti-Black Racism in the education system.

This role requires you to have experience working with marginalized and racialized communities, understand the lived realties of marginalized clients and adopt an anti- oppressive lens to practice. This role requires you to be culturally responsive to serving Black children, meaning that the successful candidate is expected to employ practices and behaviors that are modified to meet the needs of the populations it serves.

Key Responsibilities

Identify & assess individual children and their parents for strengths and needs, including risk identification, according to program standards.
Develops support plans and explore goals in conjunction with the child and their family (particularly focused on the education system)
Provides case management and care coordination for children within the school system.
Act as an advocate (within all appropriate social and education systems)
Support children in navigating various support systems to achieve optimal academic experiences.
Research, design and implement community-based information sessions for children and parents.
Provide group facilitation/mentorship.
Follow program guidelines regarding (confidentiality, case notes, the writing of reports, record keeping etc.)
Participate in quality assurance, evaluation, data collection and research activities
Administer effective discharge planning with families
Actively participate and make use of on-going clinical supervision.
Represent agency in a positive manner, promotes public relations by interpreting agency services to other organizations and community groups as needed, participates in recruitment activities
Work flexible hours to meet the needs of clients including evening work
Assume other responsibilities as assigned by management


College Diploma or University Degree in Social Work, Social Services, Education, or other Degree in a relevant field (ie. Counselling, Social Sciences)
Knowledge and experience working with Black and racialized children, youth and adolescents who experience issues of poverty, discrimination, issues in the education system and face other societal barriers.
Knowledge and/or lived experience of the diverse Black communities in Ottawa
A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience working with children/adult within in a community or school-based context.
2-3 years’ experience working with disadvantaged, vulnerable or at-risk clients in a community setting.
Experience with developing and facilitating groups focusing on the education system, health & wellness
Excellent interpersonal communication and documentation skills
Strong computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), and other databases
Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is mandatory.

Asset Qualifications

Member in good standing with a regulated college as per current standards, for practicing social work, education or psychotherapy (i.e. CRPO, OCSWSSW)

Language Requirements

This is a bilingual designated position. The successful candidate will be fluent in English and French
Lingala, Swahili, Somali, Arabic, and other mother tongue languages are an asset, in addition to English and French.
